The Requirement in Plain Terms

For the UK Student route, the English level depends on the course. Degree-level study needs CEFR B2 in reading, writing, speaking, and listening, while study below degree level needs B1 in all four. In IELTS for UKVI, B2 corresponds to at least 5.5 in each component and B1 to at least 4.0.

Who Assesses Your English

At higher education providers with a track record of compliance, the institution can assess English for degree-level courses, and a secure test is not mandatory. The confirmation of acceptance for studies records the method used. At other institutions, and for below-degree study, you provide a secure English language test.

When You Need IELTS for UKVI

If a secure test is required, IELTS for UKVI is one of the approved choices. You take it at an approved centre and enter the test reference number in your application, so the Home Office can verify it. A standard IELTS booking may not be accepted in these cases.

University Requirement Versus Visa Requirement

The university sets its own admissions requirement, often higher than the visa minimum, and may accept regular IELTS Academic. The visa has its own rules. Check whether one test result can satisfy both, and if not, plan for the stricter one.

Exemptions From the Test

Several groups are exempt from providing a secure test, including nationals of majority English-speaking countries shown by passport, applicants with a UK degree, and applicants with a degree-level qualification taught in English who have a comparability statement. Applicants who met the requirement in an earlier application, and those with certain UK school English qualifications taken under 18, may also be exempt.

Score Targets and Planning

Because the visa level is per skill, plan around your weakest skill and aim above the minimum, for example 6.0 or higher where you can. Remember that your university may require more than the visa does, so the higher of the two is your real target.

Timing and Validity

Book early enough to receive results before your application deadline, and check the validity rules for the test. If you might need to retake, allow time for that. Confirm details with your institution's international office and the official guidance.

A Worked Example

Imagine a student applying to a degree course at a provider that assesses English itself. The university may ask for IELTS Academic 6.5 overall with 6.0 in each skill for admission, and the visa requires B2. If the university confirms your English and records the method on the confirmation of acceptance for studies, you may not need a separate secure test. If the provider does not assess English itself, you would book IELTS for UKVI and aim for at least 5.5 in every skill, though your admission requirement could still be higher.

Below-Degree and Pathway Courses

Study below degree level needs B1 in all four skills through a secure test, which corresponds to at least 4.0 in each component of IELTS for UKVI. Pathway and foundation courses often fall into this category, so check the course level on your offer. The university's own admission requirement may be higher than the visa minimum.
