Skilled Worker Visa IELTS: Academic or General Training?

The Short Answer

For four-skill evidence on the UK Skilled Worker route, both IELTS for UKVI Academic and IELTS for UKVI General Training are generally accepted. The visa cares about your level in reading, writing, speaking, and listening, not about which module you sat. What matters more is that you take the UKVI version at an approved centre and reach the required level in every skill.

What the Required Level Is

New Skilled Worker applications made on or after 8 January 2026 need CEFR B2 in all four skills, which corresponds to at least 5.5 in each component of IELTS for UKVI. Because the requirement is per skill, a strong score in one skill cannot compensate for a weak one. Plan your preparation around the lowest of your four skills.

How Academic and General Training Differ

Listening and Speaking are the same in both versions. Academic Reading uses longer, more analytical texts, while General Training Reading uses everyday and workplace texts. In Writing, Academic Task 1 asks you to describe data or a process, while General Training Task 1 asks for a letter. Task 2 is an essay in both, though General Training topics tend to be more general.

Which Is Easier for Most Candidates

Many candidates find General Training Reading a little more approachable because the texts are less academic, and letter writing can feel more natural than describing charts. Others prefer Academic because they have studied at university and are used to that style. Try a practice section of each and choose the version where you score more comfortably.

Other Factors in the Choice

If you might use the same result later for a university application or professional registration, Academic may be more widely accepted for those purposes. If you might use it for Canadian immigration, General Training is the version accepted. Think about what else your result might be used for before choosing.

Do Not Confuse UKVI With Standard IELTS

The UKVI version is booked separately and taken at approved centres. A standard IELTS result may not be accepted for a UK visa. Check the booking page to confirm it says IELTS for UKVI and note the reference number that will be used to verify your result.

Rules change, so check the official Home Office guidance for your route before booking. Save a copy of the guidance page and any employer confirmation. Choose your version, prepare for all four skills, and aim comfortably above the minimum in each.

A Quick Decision Guide

If you have recently studied at university and like analysing information, Academic may suit you. If you work in practical, everyday communication and prefer writing letters, General Training may feel easier. If you are undecided, take one Reading passage and one Writing task from each version under timed conditions and compare how you feel and how you score. The version that suits you best is usually the one you should prepare for.

Preparing for the Version You Choose

Use practice material from the exact version you will sit. For Academic Writing, practise describing graphs, tables, maps, and processes, as well as essays. For General Training Writing, practise formal, semi-formal, and informal letters, as well as essays. Listening and Speaking practice is shared, so you can use it whichever version you choose.

Score Reports and What Employers See

Your Test Report Form will show the version you sat, and the Home Office verifies your result using the reference number. Employers generally care that the result meets the route requirement, not which module you chose. Keep your form number safe and enter it exactly as shown when you apply.
